Art Galleries & Museums

Maine’s dramatic coastal and island scenery, her lakes and mountains, have drawn major artists since the mid–19th century, and the experience of art as a major part of the Maine visitor’s experience has increased in recent years with galleries concentrated in Portland, Rockland, Northeast Harbor, Stonington, Blue Hill, Eastport and on Monhegan Island.

Several recent art books are also popularizing the work of dozens of significant artists; a standout is Art of the Maine Islands by Carl Little and Arnold Skolnick (Down East Books). Artist-owned galleries, which have become destinations in their own right, are found in Stonington and on the islands of Monhegan, North Haven  and Little Cranberry.

Weeklong summer arts workshops are offered at Rock Gardens Inn, and the Maine College of Art  in Portland.and in “Deer Isle, Stonington.”by the Stonington Painter’s Workshop (207-367-2368).

The most prestigious summer arts workshop in Maine is the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture .
