Bicycling

Mountain biking is particularly popular on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park (www.nps.gov/acad)

Ski areas specializing in summer mountain biking with lift-assisted, high-altitude trails include Shawnee Peak (www.shawneepeak.com) in Bridgton; Lost Valley in Auburn also opens its trails to mountain bikers, and Sugarloaf/USA (www.shawneepeak.com) offers rentals and trail maps to trails on and off the mountain.

Biking is popular on Swans Island off Acadia and on islands in Casco Bay. but Rt. 1 has too much traffic, and rural roads are generally narrow, curved, and have no shoulders, making them unsuitable for bicycling.

Dedicated recreation paths are beginning to appear, notably in Portland and Brunswick/Bath. Bicycling also makes sense in heavily touristed resort areas in which a car can be a nuisance; rentals are available in Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Camden, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Bar Harbor.
