Birding
The Maine Audubon Society (207-781-2330; www.maine
audubon.org), based at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth, maintains a number of birding sites and sponsors nature programs and field trips, which include cruises to Matinicus Rock and to Eagle Island. Note the special programming at Maine Audubon’s Adirondack-style lodges on their 1,600-acre preserve at Borestone Mountain.
On the South Coast check out Laudholm Farm in Wells, Biddeford Pool and Scarborough Marsh.
Monhegan is the island to visit in May and September.
The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge (207-454-3521) in Washington County represents the northeastern terminus of the East Coast chain of wildlife refuges and is particularly rich in bird life.
