Maine grows 98 percent of America’s lowbush blueberries.

More than 65.5 million pounds are harvested annually from an estimated 25,000 acres.

There are absolutely no human-planted wild blueberry fields.

Few growers allow U-pick, at least not until the commercial harvest is over. (One exception is Staples Homestead Blueberries in Stockton Springs.)

Then the public is invited to go “stumping” for leftovers. On the other hand, berrying along roads and hiking paths is a rite of summer.

The blueberry barrens—thousands of blueberry-covered acres—spread across Cherryfield, Columbia, and Machias (site of the state’s most colorful blueberry festival in August) in Washington County.
