Reservations are advised for the state’s 13 parks that offer camping (www.campwithme.com).
Maine’s most popular camping destinations are Baxter State Park (not part of the state park system) the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and Acadia National Park
Also see Bethel in the White Mountain National Forest
A booklet Maine Camping Guide to private campgrounds is published by the Maine Campground Owners Association .
Warren Island (just off Islesboro) and Swan Island (just off Richmond) offer orga-nized camping, and primitive camping is permitted on a number of islands through the Maine Island Trail Association .
