Canoeing, Guided Trips

Developed by the Wabanaki and still proudly manufactured in Old Town, the canoe remains the craft of choice on Maine rivers.

Novices might begin with the slow-moving, shallow Saco River, which offers a number of well-maintained camping sites. Several outfitters in the Fryeburg area offer rentals and shuttle service, and Saco Bound (www.sacoriver.com), just over the New Hampshire line, offers guided tours.

Bethel-based Mahoosuc Guide Service (www.mahoosuc.com) offers wilderness canoe/camping featuring tradition canoes and paddles which they make themselves.

Sunrise County Canoe Expeditions (207-454-7708) based on Cathance Lake in Washington County, offers staging for trips down the Grand Lake chain of lakes and the St. Croix River.
