Canoeing the Allagash
The ultimate canoe trip in Maine (and on the entire East Coast) is the 7- to 10-day expedition up the Allagash Wilderness Waterway,(L: please insert link) a 92-mile ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams in the heart of northern Maine’s vast commercial forests. We advise using a shuttle service. The general information numbers for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway are 207-941-4014 and 207-435-7963. A map pinpointing the 65 authorized campsites within the zone (and supplying other crucial information) is available free from the Bureau of Parks and Lands www.parksandlands.com; 207-287-3821), State House Station 22, Augusta 04333. A detailed map, backed with historical and a variety of other handy information, is DeLorme’s Map and Guide to the Allagash and St. John. Be aware of blackflies in June and the “no-see-ums” when warm weather finally comes. For further information, see Camping and Guide Services, and check out www.maineoutdoors.com.
