Dogsledding
Although dogsled racing is a long-established winter spectator sport,
the chance to actually ride on a dogsled is growing in popularity.
In the Bethel Area
Telemark Inn (www.telemarkinn.com) in West Bethel offers dogsledding and Mahoosuc Guide Service (www.mahoosuc.com) offer both daytrips and multi-day camping trips using traditional equipment which they make themselves. Their huskies have been featured in several films, including Never Cry Wolf.
In the Moosehead Lake region, Stephen Medera’s Song in the Woods (www.songinthewoods.com) and Ed Mathew’s Moose Country Safaris and Dogsled Trips (www.maineguide.com/sportsmen/dogsled) offer a choice of trips.
Don and Angel Hibbs have traveled more than 40,000 miles by dog team. Their Nahmakanta Lake Camps (www.mainedogsledding.com) in Rainbow Township serve as a base for driving teams (guests can ride or drive) on trails in a 27,000-acre preserve that’s Maine’s largest roadless preserve outside Katahdin—which is clearly visible from the trail system. Guests ski in 10 miles from the Golden Road.
