Guide Services

In 1897 the Maine legislature passed a bill requiring hunting guides to register with the state; the first to do so was Cornelia Thurza Crosby (better known as “Fly Rod” Crosby), whose syndicated column appeared in New York, Boston, and Chicago newspapers at the turn of the 20th century. Becoming a Registered Maine Guide entails passing one of several specialized tests—in hunting, fishing, or one of a growing number of recreational categories, including whitewater rafting, canoeing, or kayaking—administered by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

There are currently some 3,000 Registered Maine Guides, but just a few hundred are full-time professional guides. The web site of the 500-member Maine Professional Guides Association is www.maineguides.org
