In Kittery

Kittery Historical and Naval Museum (open June-Columbus Day). Ships models, archeological finds, mariner folk art and artifacts related to the history of this stretch of coast.

In The Yorks

The Old York Historical Society (open mid-June to mid-Oct.). It's best to pay the umbrella price at the new exhibit center and spend several hours wandering between these eight  18th-century buildings, scattered through Maine's oldest village. 

In The Berwicks 

Hamilton House in South Berwick is an 18th cwentury mansion in glorious gardens, sited in grounds now presedrved as Vaughan Woods State Park on the Salmon Falls River. It had fallen into ruin and was restored largely trough the efforts of novelist Saral Orne Jewett,(1849-19-9) author of  Country of the Pointed Firs.Jewett's birthplace in Berwick is also open to visitors.
